Tortolì is the most populated and the most important village of Ogliastra.
Its name derives from the word "Ilio" because the village was founded by the Trojans, but other people think it just means "village of turtle-doves".
In the XI century the little village was a part of the Giudicato of Cagliari. Then it was under the Pisane and Aragonese rule.
Nowaday Tortolì is condidered the capital of Ogliastra. Its territory more... is characterized by the beauty of its coasts, rich in rocks and white sandy beaches, such as the Lido di Orrì.
Nearby the city center there are some archaeological places.
Near Monte Terli, there are some Domus de Jaas, dates from 2700-1800 b.C.
400 mt from the Church of San Salvatore there are the ruins of a nuragh, a giant tomb a two menhir.
Very interesting the Museum of contemporary art called "Su logu de S'Iscultura" and the music festival "Rocce Rosse & Blues", where many singers have performed, such as B.B King, Wilson Pichett, Zucchero, Vasco Rossi, David Bowie, Eric Clapton and Pino Daniele.
