Carloforte is the only city center of the San Pietro island, one of the two islands of the Sulcis archipelago, province of Carbonia-Iglesias.
Thus, the city offers all the common services of a city, and counts about 6500 inhabitants.
Carloforte was created in 1736 by a group of Ligurian fishermen, and today, it is a privileged destination for the tourists looking for a peaceful holiday destination, rich in culture and delicious more... gastronomy, principally based on tuna fish, couscous and fish soup.
Indeed, Carloforte is famous for the quality of its tuna fish, and, each year, numerous tourists assist between May and June to the « Mattanza », the killing of tuna fishes, in accordance with old methods.
Situated at about 90kms from Cagliari, the San Pietro island is characterized by its numerous hills and high cliffs, by its white-sandy beach and by its green vegetation.
The island is reachable from Portoscuso or Calasetta by a 40-minutes cross.
For those who like the wild nature, a natural oasis is to discover on the other side of the island, near Cala Fico.
